About Camp McPherson
Camp McPherson is a Christian retreat center that exists to share the love of Jesus.
We are called to grow God's Kingdom and give Him glory through
meeting the needs of evangelical churches,
schools, businesses and the community by providing
a safe quality environment where the young
and old can experience His Presence and Passion,
while we aid in equipping their People.
The
History of Camp McPherson
Originating in Canada in
1949, Camp McPherson moved to Danville, OH
in 1966. The founding Board members were Ella
Clark, Don Bowers, Victor Gardner, Eugene
Kurtz, Lynford West, Clifton Hoffman and Florence
Hoffman. The Supervisor of the Eastern District
at that time was Dr. Howard Clark.
One of the requirements of
the gentleman, who sold the original 98 acres
to the International Church of the Foursquare
Gospel Organization, was that it would be
used to further the gospel in the lives of
young people, which it has now been doing
for 35 years. An additional 60 acres, on the
west side of Shadley Valley Road, were purchased
later to complete the current 158 acres of
property.
Construction actually started
in 1968 and the camp opened in 1969. During
the first two summers tents were used. With
a capacity of 400–450 people, the Tabernacle
was built upon the highest ridge of the camp,
fulfilling the vision Dr. Clark received from
the Lord. The Manager's home was built in
the Spring of 1975, and the Swimming Pool
in the Fall of 1975.
Dr. Eugene Kurtz, which the
Kurtz Retreat Center is dedicated, followed
Dr. Clark as Supervisor. In 1979, He envisioned
that Camp McPherson would have a Lodge/Retreat
Center. The project was completed in 1999
under the leadership of District Supervisor,
Dr. Dewey Morrow. Today, Morrow Lodge offers
groups excellent sleeping accommodations and
a great conference room that comfortably seats
100 people, theater style.
The first Camp Managers were
Eugene and Lavina Foos, serving for 17 years.
Tom and Sandy Grisham followed serving for
3 1/2 years. Ray and Dorothy Littig are the present
Managers and have held that position for 13
years.
Many Directors have
poured into the ministry of our youth over the
years. Those serving the Eastern District
have been Daland Ohler, Mike Orewiler, Walter
Brandenburg, Rodney Phillips, Jim Cooper,
Aaron Woodson and Perry Ross. Currently, Rev. Leslie Klingenmeier and Reverends Dan and Della Fonseca serve as the Children and Youth Directors, respectfully, for the Western and Eastern Districts of Ohio.
